Filter Get Spacey With New AMV for "Burn Out The Sun"

The video, animated by Mark Lupo, features an astronaut drifting through a maelstrom of color that encapsulates both a nostalgically-futuristic cityscape and, seemingly, the cosmos itself.

Filter, the industrial alt-rockers behind hits such as “Take a Picture” and “Hey Man Nice Shot”,  unveiled an animated music video for their track “Burn Out The Sun” off their most recent album, 2023's The Algorithm.

The video, animated by Mark Lupo, features an astronaut drifting through a maelstrom of color that encapsulates both a nostalgically-futuristic cityscape and, seemingly, the cosmos itself. Lyrics to the song can be seen appearing across the city and even the astronaut’s helmet, behind which an invisible face lies.

The “Burn Out The Sun” video drop follows a lyric video for single “For the Beaten”, which also featured an astronaut, as well as an Atanas Shopski-animated video for “Obliteration,” the most recent single from The Algorithm.

In the lead-up to the album’s release, Filter frontman Richard Patrick told Kevin Gomez of OC Music News that the astronaut was a central character of the project.

“The album is basically about an astronaut who returns to Earth and finds it completely destroyed and he’s trying to think of the reasons it got messed up,” Patrick said. “And by the end of it, he’s like, ‘I’m just going to get wasted.’”

According to Blabbermouth.net, in an interview with Michael Presti of 99WNRR Patrick spoke on the sound of The Algorithm.

"It's kind of a little bit of a return to The Amalgamut," Patrick said, referencing Filter’s third album, released in 2002. "It's so bombastic. There's so many bangers on this record. And The Algorithm, it's a little bit more a part of the times."

Patrick also elaborated on some of the politically-minded lyrical themes of the album.

"I'm still bitching, but I'm not as outwardly bitching,” he said. “I'm not taking sides as much on this record. I'm bitching and I'm talking about liars and cheaters and thieves.”

Filter is currently playing this year’s Freaks On Parade tour alongside Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper and Ministry.
