Scowl Unleashes New Single "Special", Sign to Dead Oceans Records

Moss’ visceral, screamed vocals are still front and center, even as the band stretches into pop and punk territory.

Santa Cruz hardcore band Scowl is making waves as they step into a daring new chapter with their latest single, "Special," coinciding with the announcement of their signing to Dead Oceans Records.

The track — which began taking shape during the band’s U.K. tour — is their first release since the 2023 Psychic Dance Routine EP. Like the EP, "Special" showcases Scowl's signature hardcore intensity while blending in more accessible alt rock elements. It is safe to say they're aiming at broadening their sonic palette.

Vocalist Kat Moss describes the song as a “kamikaze” dive into personal reflection. "The lyrics challenge the audience with the question, ‘What do you really want?’" Moss explains. "It's driven by a desperate search for clarity as I try to answer the same question for myself — and the answer is simple: I want to feel alive."

The band recorded the new single with Grammy-nominated producer Will Yip, who previously collaborated with them on Psychic Dance Routine. The track was mixed by renowned producer Rich Costey, whose resume includes work with Fiona Apple, Deftones, and Vampire Weekend.

While Scowl is now signed to indie-rock label Dead Oceans — home to artists like Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, and Bright Eyes — their abrasive appraoch to music remains undiluted. Moss’ visceral, screamed vocals are still front and center, even as the band stretches into pop and punk territory.

Despite being active for only five years, Scowl has already toured and shared the stage with System Of A Down, Korn, Deftones, and Limp Bizkit.
