The Iconic Drumming Behind Breaking Benjamin's Songs Via Drumeo

The man behind the kit Chad Szeliga breaks down two of the band's signature tracks and their percussion parts.

Drumeo is the number one YouTube channel when it comes to drums, as we've previously covered here. In a recent entry of their ongoing series The Iconic Drumming Behind… former Breaking Benjamin drummer Chad Szeliga tells the story of how they recorded the songs "I Will Not Bow" and "The Diary Of Jane." He also treats us to a detailed breakdown of how to play both songs on drums, with tips and tricks on how to sound more like the original recording.

When telling the story behind the songs, Szeliga recalls that the filtered drums in the intro of "I Will Not Bow" are actually played and not programmed. He also shouts out the Sevendust influence with the Morgan Rose-esque double kicks, as well as how The Police influenced his approach to cymbals. He also touches on his respect for Jeremy Hummel, who was Breaking Benjamin’s drummer before him, who played drums on the band's first two albums, Saturate and We Are Not Alone.

At the end of the video of "The Diary Of Jane," we find a more humorous side, with stories like the time Benjamin Burnley went crowd diving during "The Diary of Jane" and lost a shoe, asserting “we won’t play another song until someone gives back the shoe.” The shoe came back to the stage moments later via crowdsurf. In the "I Will Not Bow" video, we get the revelation that during the recording of the videoclip, there was no kick drum pedal for the drumkit Szeliga was just stomping on the floor.
