Scott Anderson, frontman of Canadian hard rock outfit Finger Eleven, recently spoke with Matt Bingham of Michigan’s Z93 radio station about the band’s new album Last Night On Earth. The album, released in November 2025, marks Finger Eleven’s first full-length release since 2015’s Five Crooked Lines.

“It’s great for musical quality. It’s murder for your career,” Anderson said. “My advice to any musician out there: Finish your dang record earlier than 10 years, please. Don't do this.”

Anderson said the band primarily worked in drummer and producer Steve Molella’s house, rather than renting a professional studio space as they would have in the past. He also explained the decade-long process that went into creating Last Night On Earth, detailing the advantages and disadvantages of taking it slow.

“It's much more open than it ever used to be,” Anderson said. “That's creatively satisfying, but it takes a very, very long time for everybody to be happy, because if you've got one person saying, 'No, no, no. You play this, you play this, you play this,' your album's gonna be done in, like, a week. But that's not really a satisfying vision, that's not what keep[s] bands together, in my opinion. It's not what keeps them happy, at least.”

The third single from Last Night On Earth, “Blue Sky Mystery” featuring Richard Patrick of Filter, released in September.

“[Finger Eleven] doesn’t really go outside the five members, but we were like, ‘Okay, fine, just as a thought experiment, let’s write down some names,’” Anderson said. “We thought like, ‘What about Filter on this track? It would be really cool.’ … I had a long conversation with [Patrick] after I played him the song. He really liked it. I can't believe it worked out the way it did. The collaboration, it was out of our comfort zone, but it was such an exciting idea to work with Filter.”

Anderson added that working with Patrick changed his mindset about collaborating with other artists in the future.

“I will definitely do it again,” he said. “I think it widened our horizons as far as musical possibilities.”

Anderson pointed to Finger Eleven’s 2024 summer tour in support of Creed as the motivation the band needed to push past the lack of a hard deadline and get the album finished and out into the world.

“We were like, 'Look, man, we gotta strike while the iron is kind of sort of hot. We need to figure out how to finish this record.'” Anderson said. “In a way I can sort of account for the time, but I don't want to take that long again, that's for sure."

Anderson said the level of quality control the band was able to do during the extended time between albums sets them apart from some other projects coming from veteran bands.

“I think it's difficult to get excited about an older band's new record,” Anderson said. “Sometimes those don't turn out so good, and I think this one will be a surprising one because of the circumstances. … The sacrifice was all this time, but the result is that it's a really solid record for a band that's been around for a minute.”
