We truly live in such an amazing timeline to see black metal and nu metal get smashed together. With Gonemage’s last album Spell Piercings answering the questions of “is this possible and will it be good?” with a resounding yes, Australian blackened nu metal band Mélancholia are starting to catch some attention for their own flair. With a new record, random.access.misery, on the way in August in conjunction with Nuclear Blast and Greyscale Records, the band showcases their own take on the strange combination with their new single “Picking Scabs”, complete with a visualizer.
The black metal influence is pretty evident in the riffing and some real Dani Filth-esque shrieks. Outside of that, it’s a solid track within the nu-core realm, complete with some turntable work and a pretty major Slipknot reference in the chorus.
