Self-professed cum metal band, HEALTH and gothic folk musician Chelsea Wolfe have collectively dropped a certified banger in "Mean". This is a dream collab for me personally, not only with tight production from Lars Stalfors (SALEM) and Stint (Demi Lovato, Oliver Tree), but a surprising minimalist synth-pop sound.
It's differently a HEALTH song, but more devoted fans might not like how slow and soft this sounds. However, I think showing a softer goth side is a breath of fresh air. The synths are glitchy and somehow never overdone, making the track feel like something from a ethereal vampire club with a fog machine filling the room. It's somewhere between Depeche Mode and out of body music that lifts one into the clouds. Chelsea's angelic voice really compliments Jake Duzsik's melancholy vocal delivery.
Also holy shit, did the lyrics make me LITERALLY CRY. The feelings of being stuck in a relationship trying to rebuild isn't lost on me:
"I can't fake it, I can't sleep / This fantasy I can't escape / Clouded mind, haunted lover / Doomed to want, can’t get enough."
"Mean" will most likely be on the new teased health album associated with the recent line of "Vibe Cop" merch, though this has not been officially confirmed at this time.
