Magnolia Park frontman Joshua Roberts has just released a brand-new single, "Good Girl." Joining him on the hazy, gothic-tinged track are Brooklyn-based dark pop songstress Abi Abdul and... Magnolia Park.
"But wait. Isn't Joshua Roberts in Magnolia Park?" you might be asking. He is. "Then what's going on? Did something happen? Is he leaving Magnolia Park?" No, no, nothing of the sort. In fact, Roberts already released his debut solo EP, Good For You, back in 2023. This distinction likely means fans can expect more tracks sans the other members of Magnolia Park soon.
Stepping away from the band also allows Roberts to explore other styles and write material outside the band's anime-influenced lore-heavy oeuvre. Good For You already featured modern R&B ("Heartless" and "Psylocibin"), pop ("Stay, Stay, Stay"), and disco/synthpop (the standout "Angel").
Fuck all your friends / You're coming back to my house / Girl / We don't need to pretend / To be more than this / So wear my chains / And be my good girl
Produced by his bandmates Vincent Ernst and Tristan Torres alongside Freddie Criales and Andrew Wade (Neck Deep, A Day To Remember, The Pretty Wild), the track retains the dark, sensual atmosphere that distinguishes Magnolia Park's sound. Yet, the track has a different energy thanks to the sparse, drum-heavy verses that give way to swampy, processed guitars in the chorus. Meanwhile, Abdul gives as good as she gets while embodying the other side of the song's doomed relationship. The way her voice glides around Roberts elucidates the shared complicity in this fraught, masochistic back-and-forth. Hell, even the track artwork calls back to the "hands around your neck" line from "Ask For It."

Fans can catch Magnolia Park live this summer at festivals like Vainstream, Upheaval, Vans Warped Tour, and Halloween Fest. Starting in November, the band will open for BEARTOOTH along with WindWaker and Don Broco on the Pure Ecstasy: USA Tour. And in January, the band will take part in ShipRocked 2027.
