If you’re familiar with Mike Patton, you know that man’s musical endeavors know absolutely no bounds. From the wacky off-the-wall nature of Mr. Bungle, to his iconic reign with proto-nu metallers Faith No More, and the experimental funk of Peeping Tom (to name only a few), there’s almost nothing the man can’t do or hasn’t done. In his latest mission, he’s joined forces with Scott and Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers to form AVTT/PTTN (for Avett and Patton), and they’ve got a debut single out now titled “Eternal Love”.
While we are familiar with Mr. Patton, you may not know of Scott and Seth Avett. They’re the main men behind The Avett Brothers, a folk project out of North Carolina that’s been going strong since 2000. A pair of multi-instrumentalists, they’ve got eleven albums under their belt and have been nominated for four Grammys. But how did this collaboration come to be? According to Mike Patton’s Bandcamp page:
“In 2019, Scott Avett and Mike Patton began communicating after Avett mentioned his admiration of Patton in an interview which caught the eye of Patton’s team. Patton told Avett the door was open for a collaboration should Avett ever be interested. A year or so later, Avett sent Patton some demos that blew him away.”
The debut single, “Eternal Love”, is a lush folksy track with the three vocalists trading lines and building harmonies alongside twinkling keys, head-bopping drums and strings. It’s honestly a promising introduction for those who might not know what to expect. The self-titled album holds 8 other tracks and releases November 14th. There’s also some sweet vinyl variants out, with one exclusive Onyx version available through Patton’s own Ipecac Recordings.
