The teaser for Slayground, the new horror film from A24, just dropped, and it prominently features Drowning Pool's classic mosh pit anthem "Bodies." Within seconds, the night cam footage of terrified patrons on high alert in a Halloween haunted house song's iconic opening, "Let the bodies hit the..." The screen cuts to black, a moment of silence, then singer Dave Williams lets loose as the trailer kicks into overdrive with rapid-fire footage of patrons getting jump-scared and shots of a masked, axe-wielding maniac (is there any other kind?).
The film hails from director/writer/producer/editor Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) and marks his return to theatrical release after Netflix acquired his last film, 2024's Emmy-winning Rebel Ridge, which stars Aaron Pierre (HBO's Lanterns, Netflix's Genius: MLK/Malcolm X, Amazon's The Underground Railroad). Not much is known about the plot to Slayground, but sources say the film, which currently has a two-and-a-half runtime, is Saulnier's most ambitious project yet. The film is described as a "fugitive thriller set around Halloween" and stars Cory Michael Smith, Chase Sui Wonders, Sophie Wilde, Stephen Root, Imogen Poots, Matty Matheson, and Young Mazino.
The web address in the teaser, runlikehell.com, includes a countdown clock. To what exactly remains to be seen. Many suspect the film will hit theaters in October, which, incidentally, was the film's original title. Fans can submit their email address to receive promotional materials.
In the meantime, Drowning Pool are gearing up for a month-long U.S. tour with Saliva in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the band's breakthrough albums Sinner and Every Six Seconds. Tickets are on sale now.
