Yesterday marked the extended look at the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, AKA that game that everyone has made memes about how we got different things before its release. Among the many aspects revealed in the nearly thirty-minute extended look which premiered on Netflix yesterday afternoon were several licensed songs spanning a number of genres, including:
Pop Bottles – Birdman, Lil Wayne
Pound Town – Sexyy Red, Tay Keith
Skrilla – Kodak Black
Let Your Love Flow – The Bellamy Brothers
Love Bites – Def Leppard
People Are People - Depeche Mode
But I Think It's a Dream – Captain & Tennille
Cars and Girls – Prefab Sprout
Off the Grid – Chk Chk Chk (feat. Meah Pace)
Devil Woman – Cliff Richard
Se Me Nota (Agarrame) Prod by B-One – Chimbala, Omega
Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) – Phil Collins
Mine O' Mine – Aluna, Jayda G
Inner Light – Elderbrook, Bob Moses
Not a shred of nu metal on there. The closest we get is Depeche Mode, who every band under the sun has covered at some point, at the rate things are going. Yes, they're synthpop, but their influence breaks away from genre conventions. You mean to tell me that out of all of these artists, they couldn't find room for HEALTH, who were on the soundtrack for GTA V over a decade ago before they blew up, or even Nas, who was on GTA IV's soundtrack and collaborated with Korn many moons ago? Hell, Busta Rhymes was on that same soundtrack, and he's featured in nu metal lore thanks to Limp Bizkit and "Rollin' (Urban Assault Vehicle)."
Even breaking out of the nu world, they've previously licensed top-dollar acts like Motley Crue and Judas Priest in the past, and that's just staying within heavy music? Wouldn't you, dear reader, love to be busting heads as Jason and Lucia while blasting something like Primer 55's "Loose" or Korn's "Right Now"? If they wanted something more straight-up hip-hop, maybe "N 2 Gether Now" by Limp Bizkit?
Granted, the songs featured in the extended look don't reflect the full soundtrack, so they do have until release day on November 19th to remedy this situation, but as it stands now, in the realm of nu metal video games, Grand Theft Auto VI is nowhere to be found.
And don't get us fucking started on this digital-only nonsense.
