System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan's political views have been the point of controversy, as the man behind the kit of the Armenian-American quartet came out as a supporter of the Trump administration. Wild from the group best known for songs like "Prison Song" and "B.Y.O.B," but sure, stand for something, I guess. Over the weekend, though, Dolmayan took things a step too far, as he's calling for the arrest and institutionalization of actress Charlize Theron, and even worse is that it's for something that she didn't even say..
The quote in question reads "what drives me is this: my children are all queer. My eldest child is non-binary. My son is gay. My youngest child is fluid." As much as we love a supportive parent in this house, this quote was actually said by Marcia Gay Harden, but given the makeup of the account that posted this quote, that of Newsmax reporter David Harris Jr, accuracy isn't paramount.
Oh, and dude is involved with the Make America Healthy Again campaign, spearheaded in part by RFK Jr. and apparently supported by Kid Rock, in one of the least sexy moments of homoeroticism I've ever seen. Jesus wept.
Dolmayan took the rage bait, commenting: "This woman should be in an asylum or jail. These children are being mentally abused, statistically impossible!" Gross, yes, but again, this wasn't even Theron that said this. Marcia Gay Harden said this during the "Drag Isn't Dangerous" telethon in 2023. To quote The Cat in the Hat in the 2003 live-action film, you're not just wrong, you're stupid.
I know that Dolmayan isn't the only member of System of a Down with questionable politics, as Daron Malakian and his "far-middle" bullshit can stay way the fuck away, but holy wow. It is attitudes like those put forth by Dolmayan that keep queer youth from being themselves, and lead to kids harming themselves instead. And this dreck coming from a member of a band as politically progressive as System, this just makes me sad.
Also for what it's worth, sure, the odds of someone's three children all being queer and/or gender-diverse isn't necessarily high, it's a lot likelier than Dolmayan claims. More likely than System actually reuniting, at this rate.
