New Deftones Record to Build on Koi No Yokan and Ohms, Says Stephen Carpenter

Though details about the album’s sound and release date remain under wraps, guitarist Stephen Carpenter recently dropped some hints during an appearance on Cypress Hill's B-Real’s The Dr. Greenthumb Show.

Deftones fans have been eagerly awaiting the band’s tenth studio album, and it looks like the wait is slowly drawing to a close. The Sacramento metal legends hit the studio earlier this year in Nashville, teaming up once again with producer Nick Raskulinecz, known for his work on Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan. Chino Moreno returned in May to lay down final vocals, wrapping up the recording process.

Though details about the album’s sound and release date remain under wraps, guitarist Stephen Carpenter recently dropped some hints during an appearance on Cypress Hill's B-Real’s The Dr. Greenthumb Show. When asked about the new album's sound, Carpenter explained:

“I feel this one sounds like a continuation of Ohms and Koi, that’s what I would say… I tell you what, I think when you hear it, like all of our records, you will hear our sound. You’ll hear us. But I think you’re going to hear things on this one that you never heard on any of them. So…”

When asked whether Chino Moreno will include any rapping on the new record, Carpenter responded, “not yet,” while noting that Moreno often surprises with his ability to flip his vocal style: “He’s really good at flipping up what he does… still doing what he does. It’s actually pretty dope.”

With a huge U.S. tour kicking off in February 2025 alongside The Mars Volta and Fleshwater, fans can expect a lot of excitement leading up to the album’s release. The tour, which will span major cities and arenas across the country, showcases Deftones’ growing popularity, especially with younger audiences discovering their music through TikTok.
