Between her solo work and her collaborations with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, Robyn Adele Anderson has given dozens of contemporary pop songs a fresh coat of lounge-colored paint for the last decade. Best known for her take on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” and a doo-wop interpretation of Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop,” Anderson has amassed a dedicated following. She’s no stranger to covering heavier music, either, as on her own channel, she’s covered Papa Roach’s “Scars” and Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” within the last couple of months.
Now, Anderson has gone darker and moodier than perhaps ever before, as she recently put her pipes to work on Slipknot’s “Duality.” Earl Maneein of Seven Suns adopts the guitar parts for his violin, while drummer Michael Kadnar of Downfall of Gaia deftly marries the percussion parts devised by the late Joey Jordison for a jazzier, but no less spirited, take.
Even more impressive is the claim that the video was shot live in a single take. Taking an iconic song like “Duality” and completely rebuilding it from the ground up is a tall task, but Anderson’s rendition and her band’s execution make it look easy. Hopefully this isn’t the last time she takes on a track from Iowa’s greatest exports.
