Industrial and self-branded "deathstep" duo A Place to Kill, comprised of Filter veteran Richard Patrick and There Is No Us vocalist Jim Lovau, have just released a music video for "What Feels Right." "What Feels Right" is the second track off the band's self-titled EP APTK, and one of the few times guitars are used on the track as well. Jim Louvau refers to the track as being very blunt and quote "probably the most straightforward track on the EP".
Speaking further on the recording process with Revolver, Louvau stated:
"When Richard sent me the track originally he only had a scratch vocal for the chorus with the lyric 'Hey, ya gotta do what feels right now.' I said, 'If we change it to "hate" instead of "hey," I think we got something.'”
Outside of everything stated, I think the lack of dubstep elements throughout the EP is disappointing, bordering on false advertising. "What Feels Right" hits me as sadly generic; I sat down to listen to the song and without lyrics the track seems unintelligible, with stock loops and drums that come close to perfect execution but ultimately miss the mark. It seems even with intentional listening, the track was in one ear, out the other. "What Feels Right" ironically feels wrong.
As for the bright, colorful, blue and red music video directed by Tony Aguilar, I do think it brilliantly complements the song. The dithered glitched visuals are a perfect thematic nod to the tech panopticon the lyrics and music of the band revel in. To quote the band:
“This world has turned into a nightmarish hellscape,” declared Patrick. “We figured if it’s going to burn this bright and this loud, it deserves a soundtrack to match. That’s why Jim and I created A Place To Kill — music for the chaos we’re living in.”
