While most casual fans of pop music may be more familiar with acts such as BTS, Stray Kids, or SHINee, the world of K-pop is one to get lost in. Every new song is a comeback, every music video or live performance is a grand production, and the styling of the idols has even drawn the attention of the biggest fashion houses in the world. That said, for the time being, one of the bigger names in the game is about to be put on the backburner, and for fans of heavy music, that is a shame, though many of those same fans may not be aware.
Dreamcatcher are known in the K-pop world as the “face of rock in K-pop,” with their music taking influence from acts such as Linkin Park, Evanescence, and BABYMETAL. Their sound is far more rock-oriented than most in the genre, with powerful vocals and heavy guitars. Given that main vocalist Siyeon fronted a rock band when she was in high school, and all seven members underwent vocal training to ascertain a more rock-based style in their singing, they are more than qualified to lead the charge set by bands such as Japan’s One Ok Rock.
Add to this their sharp and impactful dances, foregoing the traditionally cute or aegyo style for more aggressive, intentional movements, and Dreamcatcher stands as an oddity in a typically squeaky-clean and sanitized world. For evidence of this, look no further than the video for their 2020 single “Scream.”
Unfortunately, for the time being, the group’s future is unknown. Earlier this month, it was announced that three members’ contracts - Handong, Gahyun, and Dami - would not be renewed and would therefore expire on March 31, 2025. The remaining four members - Siyeon, JiU, SuA, and Yoohyeon - will be focusing on other projects, but have assured fans that Dreamcatcher is not splitting up.
For the sake of InSomnias everywhere, may the contract issues be worked out, and one of the hardest-rocking acts in the Asian music world be able to continue unfettered. And whether or not they are resolved, may the seven members be able to spread their music and their vibe in whatever comes next.
