Godsmack To Focus On Greatest Hits, No New Albums Planned

“When I go to see my favorite bands… do I really wanna hear their new album? Probably not. I wanna hear "Dream On," "Walk This Way".

In a recent interview with Detroit’s WRIF radio, Sully Erna of Godsmack confirmed that the band's latest album, Lighting Up The Sky, released in February 2023, will likely be their last. Erna explained that the band is shifting focus from creating new music to celebrating their 30-year catalog. "There’ll be no more new Godsmack," he said, adding, “We’re going to honor the catalog of music we created and enjoy the greatest-hits moments.”

Addressing the decline in full album consumption, Erna pointed out, "Nobody's really buying full albums anymore… people make playlists of their favorite songs." He expressed that he no longer wants to dedicate years to crafting albums that fans only partially engage with. “We have 27 Top Tens. That's a lot, right? That means we can’t even play them all in one night,” he said, emphasizing the band's rich catalog.

Although not ruling out future music entirely, Erna shared that the decision to step back from albums aligns with how he views legacy acts like Aerosmith and Metallica: “When I go to see my favorite bands… do I really wanna hear their new album? Probably not. I wanna hear "Dream On," "Walk This Way". Don't spend 45 minutes playing your new record because that's not the nostalgia of why you've been around for 40, 50 years. For our fanbase, I think we’re at that level.”

While fans might not hear new albums, Godsmack remains committed to live performances. Erna hinted at potential solo projects but reaffirmed his love for playing shows: "We love playing live, and that’s what we’re gonna do for now."

Godsmack is on tour with Nothing More and Flat Black (ex Five Finger Death Punch) for most of October.
