After an on-stage incident that resulted in paramedics arriving at Nonpoint’s January 12 show in Louisville, vocalist Elias Soriano has revealed the cause of drummer Robb Rivera’s unexpected health scare: A couple cups of coffee.
In an interview with Outlander Media, Soriano reiterated his previous statement from the band’s social media, saying Rivera is back in performing condition after receiving treatment - and being informed to stay away from caffeine.
“The doctor said he was low on magnesium and potassium, so he's just gotta hydrate [and] make sure he doesn't drink caffeine before a show, and he performed last night. No problems, no issues,” Soriano said.
He also told the story of Rivera’s encounter with regular coffee and how it caused a reaction during the performance.
“It was a perfect storm, a mix of a couple of different things. He normally doesn't drink caffeinated coffee, and that day he had gone down to the local coffee shop and had a couple of cups of coffee that were not decaf, because they didn’t have decaf at the time. And then that mixed with just the stress of the show, and blood sugar.”
Soriano added that age can also be a factor when considering a performer’s health.
“You're getting older, and the older you get, your body doesn't work the same. So normally, two cups of coffee and a little stress would have done it, but…”
Rivera had released a video statement on the band’s Instagram shortly after his trip to the hospital where he clarified his emergency was in no part caused by alcohol or drugs.
“To the people that said that this was due to drugs: Shame on you. Anybody [who] knows me out there knows that I do not use drugs at all or drink alcohol,” Rivera said in the video.
