Record Store Day is a celebration of our favorite purveyors of physical music media, the holdouts against the onslaught of streaming services and the place where your folks probably hung out at a bit too much in their college years. In all seriousness, Record Store Day has been a staple of the music industry since its inception in 2007. While the official Record Store Day is typically held in April (mark your 2025 calendars for April 12th while you’re at it), a Black Friday spin-off has surfaced within the last few years as a response to capitalism’s wildest invention.
With regards to our favorite genre, two of its progenitors have releases planned for this upcoming RSD Black Friday. Rage Against the Machine will re-release their Democratic National Convention 2000 live album on clear window pane vinyl, six years after the initial release on RSD 2018. The band famously protested the convention by playing a concert across from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, resulting in this six-song live EP featuring “Bulls on Parade,” “Killing in the Name,” “Sleep Now in the Fire,” and more.
Another live record will come from Cypress Hill, as the massively influential West Coast hip-hop group will release their 1999 Rock im Park performance on vinyl and CD. This is the first time this performance has been released, with the wax sporting a blue and white smoke variant. The CD version will boast a vinyl look-alike disc in blue.
