RIP Mark Snow, Prolific 'The X-Files' and 'Smallville' Composer

The iconic composer passed away Friday, July 4th, at the age of 78.

One of the driving forces behind the soundtracks to a number of iconic television series and films, Mark Snow, has passed away. To us in the nu world, his theme for The X-Files will be the most familiar, though his resume includes dozens of credits, including Smallville and One Tree Hill.

Snow, born Martin Fulterman on August 26, 1946, attended Julliard and was roommates with Michael Kamen, who provided the S in the legendary Metallica recording S&M. Beginning in the orchestra, Snow switched to electronic instrumentation in the Eighties, which in turn led to his tenure as the composer for The X-Files, the title theme for which was an unexplainable runaway hit as a single in the UK.

Throughout his career, Snow was nominated for fifteen Emmy Awards, including six for the aforementioned X-Files. He was also a perennial winner of the Most Performed Underscore Award from the ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards.

His scores and compositions have outlived and will outlive Mark Snow's time on this mortal coil. He provided the soundtrack to so many notable and legendary shows, to the point where one became a cultural flashpoint unlike most.

We wish Snow's family peace during this difficult time, and we thank Mr. Snow for the music.
