Earlier today, Record Store Day announced its list of exclusive titles for 2024, with one particular gem standing out from the crowd: a double-LP vinyl reissue of the soundtrack for the superhero film Spawn.
Spawn: The Album, the soundtrack accompanying the 1997 cinematic adaptation of the Image comic series, stands out for its fusion of late-'90s electronica with alternative rock and nu-metal. The album features an eclectic mix of collaborations, including Orbital & Kirk Hammett, Korn & The Dust Brothers, Filter & The Crystal Method, Prodigy & Tom Morello, Butthole Surfers & Moby, Metallica & DJ Spooky, Henry Rollins & Goldie, Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot, Incubus & DJ Greyboy, Soul Coughing & Roni Size, among others. This collaborative effort echoes the spirit of the 1993 rap-rock summit that was the Judgement Night soundtrack.
While Record Store Day has yet to reveal the cover art for the reissued album, it is noted that it will be pressed on "smoky red vinyl."
Although the movie was met with negative critical reception, Spawn: The Album debuted at #7 on the Billboard Album Chart and went gold. Notably, Filter & The Crystal Method's track "(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do" became a hit on both the Modern Rock and Active Rock charts.
