Since bursting onto the scene in 2012, Poppy has covered an array of artists. From Bob Dylan and Tears for Fears to Ray Charles and R.E.M., the enigmatic singer/songwriter has proved equally bold crafting her sound as she has reinterpreting others'. While her recent output has focused more on originals, she found time to deliver a surprisingly heartfelt—and quietly subversive—rendition of Wham!'s holiday staple "Last Christmas" last October. And now she's back with a version of Alanis Morissette's classic "Hand In My Pocket."
Co-written by Morissette and famed producer Glen Ballard (Wilson Phillips, Van Halen, No Doubt, P.O.D.), "Hand In My Pocket" was the third single from the Canadian songstress's landmark Jagged Little Pill. This new version arrives courtesy of the soundtrack to Chandler Levack's 2025 coming-of-age romantic comedy Mile End Kicks. The film is distributed in the U.S. by Sumerian Pictures, an offshoot of Sumerian Records.
For this version, Poppy and producer Mike Elizondo (50 Cent, Mastodon, Linkin Park, Twenty One Pilots) trade out the original's spangly guitars and harmonica for a stripped-down, Trent Reznor-esque bed of piano and electronic flourishes. There's some extra boom in the drums, but the overall feel remains. Despite the sonic makeover, the lyrics remain fully intact this time around. Or maybe the Canadian filmmakers thought it best not to tinker too much with the work of a national treasure.
Starting in July, fans across North America can see Poppy with special guests LANDMVRKS and Thousand Below on her Constantly Nowhere Tour in support of her new album Empty Hands. Starting in September, she'll support Evanescence on their long-awaited world tour. Joining them will be special guests K.Flay and Nova Twins. The remainder of the year will find Poppy making appearances at Rock in Rio and Knotfest in Mexico City. On November 28th, she'll rejoin Evanescence for the band's first show in Malaysia in over a decade.
