Primus has a new man behind the kit in John Hoffman, and his first tour of duty has been Sessanta 2.0, the celebration of Maynard James Keenan's 60th birthday. Part of the draw of the show, aside from members of Primus, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer playing on stage throughout the entire show, was the tease of potential new songs from all three acts, and Primus have delivered a double dose of new cuts.
The first is "Little Lord Fentanyl," a trippy jam featuring the aforementioned Keenan. It's reminiscent of the hazier art-rock of later-era Primus, with Les Claypool's and Keenan's voices switching between restrained sing-song and melodic oddity. The guitar work of Ler Lalonde provides flourishes of strange and alluring whimsy against the slap-heavy bass of Claypool.
On the B-side of this twofer is a live version of the Brown Album track "Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread)," recorded from the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia, PA. It's more guitar-forward, with Claypool's vocals following the bassline before an all-out instrumental break. Primus is a power trio in alternative music, and here they show why the new drummer Hoffman made sense as the pick to succeed Tim "Herb" Alexander.
The band is offering a 7" single with these two songs, which can be found here. Stream the new song "Little Lord Fentanyl" and the live version of "Duchess" below:
