EP Review: PINKNOISE // 'FLESH AND BONE'

On their second EP, Kacey Foxx gets angrier and more melodic.

On their first EP HUMAN = KIND, Kacey Foxx was working out what their solo work would look like. This time around with FLESH AND BONE, Foxx is working out some demons, exorcising a past that did them dirty. Whereas the maiden voyage of PINKNOISE was more melodic, the second trip is much darker and vitriolic. This new release flays back the skin and gets right into the viscera, and it's done well.

The sound Foxx achieves this time around is weightier, particularly on the almost doom-sounding "Bite My Tongue" or the title track. The latter has an intro that feels peak nu, with a breakdown that evokes memories of peak era Korn. Among the most pissed-off of everything on offer is "Talk Talk," which is definitely Foxx getting things off their chest in more ways than one.

With all of the heaviness in the lyrical and melodic content, there's still accessibility to be found, namely in the radio-friendly "Rain." The closing "Why You Survived" is a tribute to a friend, and as such carries a relatability and an emotional quality to it all its own.

Now that Foxx has exhibited their ebbs and flows, it's time for them to harness it into an album. They have a clear vision for what they want their sound to be, and a gimmick that has seen them amass viral fame. While neither EP has disappointed, it's time for Foxx to stick the landing and make the third time the charm, whatever form that third time takes.

FLESH AND BONE is available now via Nettwerk Music Group.
