Song Review: FEVER 333 // "Higher Power"

“Higher Power” strikes back at bigotry, holier-than-thou types, and xenophobia, all in a nice, neat, sub-three minute package.

It’s not often that a nu metal song can be called a Pride anthem, but with “Higher Power”, FEVER 333 might have what the doctor ordered–albeit a few weeks late for Pride Month.

“Higher Power” strikes back at bigotry, holier-than-thou types, and xenophobia, all in a nice, neat, sub-three minute package. The song’s bouncing, hip-hop flavored beat that gives way to a two-note main riff is more than enough to get heads bobbing before vocalist Jason Butler starts dropping bars like “if we are born equal, how can someone be illegal?” and “the transfixion on all trans fiction/such a poor depiction of all these gorgeous people.”

Heavy music is in dire need of more outward, visible allies, and FEVER 333 are a welcome addition to the cause. “Higher Power” is the very definition of “aggressively inclusive,” calling on any member of the disenfranchised to find their own higher power and “give it to ‘em.” Not since Fred Durst proclaimed “for all the ladies, and the fellas, and the people who don’t give a fuck” has this genre had such a rousing, fist-pumping, “fuck yeah!” message like this.

The track follows the release of the energetic single “New West Order” last month. A new album has yet to be announced, but with a North American tour coming this October and a European tour to follow, it may only be a matter of time before the follow-up to 2020’s Strength in Numb333rs is unveiled.
