"Find good in the goodbyes."
We've got a little more than a month until UK post-hardcore outfit Static Dress sic their second album Injury Episode upon this world, following up their breakout hit Rouge Carpet Disaster. The day before the band takes the stage of Rough Trade Below in New York for an intimate pop-up, they have released a new single "...hospice".
"...hospice" is unlike the other two singles the band has released already, and unlike most of their material. It's heaviness comes from the emotion of it all, the instrumental intensity cranked back to let the words wash over you. The only breakdown here is your own. "...hospice" takes notes from both "such.a.shame" and "Marisol", and somehow managing to improve on both.
Frontman Olli Appleyard's smooth tones coat the dreamlike atmosphere laid down by guitarist Vincent Weight's gentle chords and drummer Sam Ogden's punchy fills. George Holding rounds out the crew, with a heartbeat bassline and a combo of backup and harsh vocals to add one final cherry to the sundae of emotion. "...hospice"'s chorus is massive, practically built for the arena, for thousands of fans to sing along with hands raised above their heads and swinging from side to side.
"So take my dying hand / find good in the goodbyes"
In an interview with Kerrang, it's noted that "...hospice" is an allegory for being abandoned as you get older. This is reflected in the beautiful accompanying video where, for a large majority, Appleyard is separated from the group, left behind as they don their instruments on a stage that seems to tower on forever. The locales in the video are beautiful. Pristine checkered-floor hallways, a ballroom decorated with masked "vultures" (The paparazzi from Human Props) playing various string instruments. All the while, the masked figure known as Contrast, (formally played by Weight) and an unnamed character, played by former bassist Connor Reilly stalk the corridors with goals unknown.
Static Dress is a band of inimitable range, dedicated to shattering all expectations laid at their feet, and "...hospice" only furthers that notion, providing one of the most unique tunes from the band to date. Injury Episode is shaping up to be a real beast of an album.
