Christmas may still be 71 shopping days away, but that hasn't stopped Poppy from releasing a cover of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" smack in the middle of October. Produced by frequent collaborator Jordan Fish, the Spotify single brings the holiday classic into the new millennium with updated synths, moody countermelodies, and walls of guitars. Fans first got word of the surprise release via Fish's Instagram:
Listeners familiar with the Wham! original (or its numerous covers) may notice the absence of the bridge section and the removal of the line "Now I've found a real love, you'll never fool me again." That blink-and-you'll-miss-it edit strips the song of any sense of closure. She'll give her heart to someone special, but that doesn't mean she's found real love.
This song is just the latest in a string of triumphs for the Grammy-nominated singer. In addition to her hit single with Amy Lee and Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox), her collaboration with BABYMETAL just premiered its new video. And starting at the of the month, she'll support Linkin Park on the South American leg of their From Zero World Tour. Tickets are available here. Her most recent album, Negative Spaces, is out now on Sumerian Records.
