Imagine that it's 1999, you're at a record shop, and your eyes land on a brand new VHS tape displaying a menagerie of masked freaks in red jumpsuits. If you didn't know any better, you might think it's a scary movie that's out of place at a music store. It's actually a video album by Slipknot, titled Welcome to Our Neighborhood, but these guys looked straight out of a horror flick. For those who picked it up out of morbid curiosity, their eyes would be opened to a whole new world of metal madness.

Released on November 9th, 1999 on VHS (and later on DVD in 2003 with bonus content), Welcome to Our Neighborhood chronicled the story of metal's hottest new band as they exploded onto the scene after the successes of their debut studio album, Slipknot, and their premiere on the Ozzfest festival earlier that year. This documentary features an introduction to the band members, live performances from the aforementioned tour, music videos, and interview snippets.

The live recordings showcase the spectacle that is a Slipknot set, from the mosh pits, middle fingers, stage diving, and writhing on the ground, among other crazy antics from both performers and attendees. Nine lunatics sharing a cramped stage together really is a sight to behold. The Iowans were set on making a memorable first impression on their crowds, and their raucous presentation captured the attention of the metal world at large. The interview gives a glimpse into the (sic) and twisted masterminds behind the music, discussing their hometown of Des Moines, why they wear masks, and the effect their songs have on fans.

The nu metal legends have spent the past year celebrating the 25th anniversary of their iconic debut, including a tour where they performed the album in full. Most recently, they released a limited edition box set of goodies that sold out instantly. Slipknot fans have consistently proven their dedication throughout the year. Many comments on the YouTube video reminisce on their discovery of the band around the time of this documentary's release, and how they've been a lifelong fan ever since. Truly one of the most influential and innovative bands of our time.
