Poppy just unleased "Guardian," the third single from her upcoming album, Empty Hands. The track, written co-written by Poppy and frequent collaborator Jordan Fish, along with guitarists Stephen Harrison and Julian Gargiulo, finds the Grammy-nominated singer exposing the tenderness underneath the rage. "You're in my every breath, I'll give you all that I have left / But I'll be there, I'll be your guardian" she sings with crystalline clarity against guitars that nimbly shift between textures, chugging and biting.
Immaculately produced by Fish (ex-Bring Me The Horizon), the militaristic snare work after the bridge is a nice touch. The most affecting moment arrives at the end when Poppy sings the final line unaccompanied, completely exposed. For all the mystique and sonic grandeur, she's nothing if not sincere.
Following a show in São Paulo, Poppy sat down with Conexão POP to talk about what makes this upcoming album different:
It's a trip. It is made of several colors, with references to the past, present and future. It's much more colorful than the two singles you've heard so far. When you look at the work as a whole, you can see all its colors
Empty Hands comes out January 23 on Sumerian Records. To celebrate the album's release, her Constantly Nowhere Tour with Ocean Grove and Inertia will kick off on January 20 in Brisbane, Australia before heading over to Europe and the UK with Fox Lake. Later in the year, Poppy will join Evanescence on the European/UK leg of their just announced world tour. Until then, fans can check out her cover of Wham!'s classic "Last Christmas."
