The influence of Deftones on modern heavy music is pervasive and palpable, no matter which subgenre is the topic of discussion. Chicago duo Wretched Blessing, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Kayhan Vaziri and vocalist/drummer Rae Amitay, have paid tribute to the influential group with a new dual single entitled you’ll bleed out of control, which serves as a way to fund their upcoming recording and tours.
“Elite” from the seminal White Pony and “My Own Summer (Shove It)” from Around the Fur get the works from WB, maintaining the crushing heaviness and trippy melodicism, with the vocals of the two singers ranging from the crooning to the kvlt. The screams are more reminiscent of black metal harshes than anything else, though this is very much in line with Wretched Blessing’s previous work, last year’s self-titled LP, which blends “death metal, black metal, hardcore, and punk in shifting proportions.”
To that end, the covers are faithful enough to be instantly recognizable, but not copy-pasted to the point where a cover is unnecessary.
The band’s next release will be an EP coming later in the spring.
