Since their 2013 debut Lux, the alternative metal outfit Gemini Syndrome have released a steady stream of music with esoteric themes and grander concepts. We’ve gone nearly four years since the band’s last LP 3rd Degree - The Raising, and while the band has released a total of six singles in the span of two years, very little has been made known of their next studio album, Origin: From Nothingness to Everything. So what is the story so far?
“Primordial” - released June 29, 2023
Immediately, the tone of the album’s first single is darker, with a snarling guitar line thanks to Miguel “Meegs” Rascon. The dance beat underneath the chorus gives a liveliness and kinetic energy which leans the track out. Compared to their previous output, this song has a bite to it that hasn’t been featured, perhaps signaling a new sound for the quartet.
“Wake Up” - released August 31, 2023
This is a haunting track, a slow build into a hulking monster. Starting off with a piano melody, singer Aaron Nordstrom’s voice softly reflects on the state of affairs, as the rest of the band and harmonized vocals start creeping their way into the track. This slow burn kicks up into a conflagration around the three-minute mark as everything comes into a head. “Wake Up” builds upon the darkness of “Primordial,” cementing that the new sound the former accomplished would not be a dalliance, but rather a declaration.
“Conquistador” - released October 26, 2023
From moment one to moment done, this song batters the listener with monstrous riffing and furious drumming, the latter provided by Brian Steele Medina. Nordstrom’s vocal delivery goes between his howling screams and a fast-talking growl. The bridge features a stanza that sounds more like a nursery rhyme or a children’s game, with the cadence to match, and while the first instance is jarring, the second round for the outro is given a heavier treatment to match the rest of the track tonally.
“Suffer in Silence” - released January 30, 2025
After a brief bit of amp feedback, this song charges forward with a driving pace. It’s perhaps the closest thing to classic Gemini Syndrome, as the drumming and the chorus both feel like something that might have featured on either of the band’s first two albums. The breakdown at the end keeps things in a more modern light, and the song never stops never stopping, but it does leave the listener wondering why the sudden shift back to the old sound when the new sound has been not just the intention, but the selling point for the new album?
“2B1” - released February 27, 2025
The low end on this song is reminiscent of “Die With Me,” perhaps the strongest and demonstrably highest-charting single from 3rd Degree. Using the quiet verse, loud chorus dynamic that is inextricably linked to alternative music, the vocal harmonies add another layer to this highly-accessible song. Of all of the singles so far from Origin, this feels the most like a proper modern rock single.
“Carousel” - released March 27, 2025
A touch of prog and a change of time signature make for an interesting track, to say nothing of Alessandro Paveri’s hypnotic bass grooves on display. This feels like a good bridge between the old and the new sound that Gemini Syndrome are going for, as it feels mystical and methodical at once. It is well-balanced and a surprising treat from a band who more or less has mapped out their sound and its motifs, even with some of the more recent experimentation.
