YouTube musician Anthony Vincent built his Ten Second Songs channel around a chameleon concept: take a popular song and re-do it in the style of musicians whose styles are far removed from the original. Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” in the style of Metallica, Slipknot, and Prince? Sure. Jason DeRulo’s “Talk Dirty” done as AC/DC, Ray Charles, and White Zombie? Why not? Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” as a Disturbed song? It’s catchier than you think.
As of late, Vincent, also of the band Set the Charge, has been keeping his covers at a one to one ratio; that is, one style for one song. For his take on TLC’s classic “No Scrubs,” he decided to re-imagine the R&B staple (and one of the best uses of the term “buster” that doesn’t sound like a boomer scolding a teenager) as a song by Korn, and the subsequent result is something ripped right out of the late Nineties.
While Vincent declares that he’ll “only do it cuz it’ll be funny,” his take on “No Scrubs” is a dead ringer for an early Korn song. To the unknowing ear, this sounds like a B-side cover from the Follow the Leader or Issues era of the band, and while I maintain that Jonathan Davis’ voice is unique, Vincent’s attempt at emulating him is a bit unnerving in its accuracy. We even get a “Freak on a Leash”-esque beatboxing break before a rattlingly heavy breakdown that even further borrows from the aforementioned Korn hit.
There is one thing to note… since when did Epiphone start making seven-string guitars? Especially a seven-string Les Paul like the one Vincent plays here?
