Deftones Bring “Risk” Back to Their Live Set After 15 Years

The Sacramento legends revisit one of their most emotionally charged songs, written in the aftermath of the car accident that left Chi Cheng in a coma.

Deftones brought “Risk” back to the stage for the first time since 2011 as they kicked off their 2026 European summer tour at METAStadt in Vienna, Austria, on August 16.

The 21-song set marked the return of the Diamond Eyes track to the band’s live repertoire, alongside four songs from their latest album, Private Music: “My Mind Is A Mountain,” “Locked Club,” “Infinite Source,” and “Milk Of The Madonna.”

Originally released in 2010, “Risk” carries a particularly emotional weight in Deftones’ catalog. The song was written in the aftermath of the 2008 car accident that left founding bassist Chi Cheng in a coma. Cheng remained in a minimally conscious state for several years before passing away in April 2013 at the age of 42.

Chino Moreno has previously described “Risk” as “one of the most touching and moving songs” Deftones have ever written.

Now, 15 years after its last live performance, the song has returned to the setlist as Deftones continue their European run. The band will headline All Points East's Outbreak Fest in London on August 23.
