Deftones played their first set of 2024 last night at Coachella's Outdoor Theatre to a high energy evening crowd. For all the talk of "TikTok Vibetones" and "nu-gaze" the set trended towards their nu-metal roots, firmly planting their flag as one of the few heavy acts on the festival lineup.

The setlist included a rare live performance of their cover of the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" timed right as the sun set over the desert, as well as another rarity--their first performance of "Combat" since 2011.

In addition to their performance, Chino Moreno and Abe Cunningham gave an update on a new Deftones album in the works during a backstage interview with KROQ saying, "We've just sort of been working on and off over the last year and a half. From when we started writing to where we're sitting right now is we have a whole record recorded, all musically, and it's pretty much my job now to finish up the vocals."

When asked when the album might be finished, Chino answered,

"I have this show again next week and then straight after that I go back home to Oregon and I go in the studio, so as long as that takes. I hate to put a definite time frame, because we're not really in a rush. We want it to be great, I think that's most important. But it is coming and it's really good."

Moreno also pointed out that this has been the band's first time back in the recording studio since before Covid when they were recording Ohms.
