Former Sepultura and current Slipknot drummer Eloy Casagrande claimed both the 'Metal Drummer of the Year' and 'Drum Performance of the Year' titles at the 2024 Drumeo Awards.
The competition for the Metal Drummer category was fierce to say the least, with nominees including Baard Kolstad of Leprous, Anthrax legend and double bass pioneer Charlie Benante, Architects' Dan Searle, and current Sepultura drummer Greyson Nekrutman.
In the Drum Performance category, Casagrande faced Colin Brittain (Linkin Park), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Steve Smith (Journey), and Mario Duplantier (Gojira).
Casagrande’s double nomination is a no brainer, seeing as he’s one of Drumeo’s recurring faces. Drumeo stated on their website: "Metal drumming requires equal portions of precision, stamina, and brute force. This year’s winner had a successful year recording and/or touring with their band. In 2024, Eloy Casagrande officially joined Slipknot. Need we say more?”
In response to the recognition, Casagrande expressed his gratitude on Instagram:
"Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I’m immensely grateful for the awards and for all the recognition. But I must say that, regardless of the awards, my happiness is playing the drums. It’s what I want to do every day.
“What is art but the denial of life?”
Casagrande's resume already solidifies his status as a modern metal spearhead, and the industry sure as hell wants you to know that. He was also voted Best Metal Drummer in Modern Drummer magazine’s 2024 Readers' Poll
