Primus Enlist Former Drummer Bryan "Brain" Mantia For New Year's Eve Eve Oakland Show

Primus are in the New Year’s spirit, as the alt-metal oddballs are looking for a new drummer. The band has had a reported 5,000 submissions from piqued-interest percussionists, but the final decision will come in a few months, with the selected skinsperson debuting in late April on the Sessanta v2.0 tour alongside Puscifer and A Perfect Circle.

In the meantime, though, the band has a handful of shows on the docket, and for part of their recent show in Oakland, CA on December 30th, Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde were joined by the band’s former drummer Bryan “Brain” Mantia. Brain previously played with the band in 1989 before the recording of Suck on This, and manned the kit for the band’s late Nineties output: 1997’s Brown Album, 1998’s covers EP Rhinoplasty, and 1999’s nu metal-leaning Antipop

The aforementioned Oakland show was not solely Primus, but an amalgamation of Primus, Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel, and Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. The setlist ran as follows:

  1. "Holy Mackerel"
  2. "Highball With the Devil"
  3. "Hendershot"
  4. "Frog Brigade"
  5. "Up on the Roof"
  6. "David Makalaster"
  7. "Riddles Are Abound Tonight"
  8. "D's Diner"
  9. "Restin' Bones"
  10. "Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers"
  11. "American Life"
  12. "Fisticuffs"
  13. "Shake Hands With Beef"
  14. "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver"
  15. "Here Come the Bastards"
  16. "Cosmic Highway"

This marks the first time that “Restin’ Bones” was played live since 1997.
