Sleep Theory are back, baby! Not that they ever went away, but it's exciting to see the Memphis alt-metal band heading into their next chapter following the breakout success of their debut album, 2025's Afterglow. Following the acoustic reworkings on September's Paper Hearts (Reimagined) EP, this new single, entitled "Giving In," finds the band returning to their signature alt-metal sound.
The track is co-written by the band along with producer/mixer/songwriter David Cowell (Skillet, Line So Thin, Roses Unread) who helmed Afterglow. Built on walls of tight, syncopated guitars and flashes of glittering synths, "Giving In" showcases the band's knack for hooky, charging arrangements elevated by singer Cullen Moore's powerful R&B-tinged vocal delivery. (E)motional (S)upport (C)are (P)ackage made the band's pop influences explicit, but they've always been a part of Sleep Theory's sound.
Special shout-out to guitarist Daniel Pruitt for injecting hardcore riffage and unclean vocals (check out how that bridge shifts from metalcore to full-on deathcore) that give the track its dark, dynamic edge. It's a testament to the band and Cowell's subtle production that the track can go to such heavy, dark places sonically while remaining light on its feet.
Face down with my nails in the dirt again / Fade out like a light cause I needed some more / Can’t embrace it / Can’t escape it / It’s just the same as before, but
And as for those cryptic social media posts? Looks like it's not alien but rather some manifestation of Moore's inner demons that he must contend with in the Lewis Cater-directed music video. Unfortunately, that struggle with inner demons is complicated by the presence of multiple, nefarious versions of Moore (re)spawning and taking his place. Which one is the real Moore? Unclear. The video definitely has, among other things, shades of The Prestige, which is never a bad thing.
Beginning this Sunday, November 1st, fans can see Sleep Theory and French metalcore outfit LANDMVRKS supporting nu metal/hard rock veterans Papa Roach on the European/UK leg of their Rise Of The Roach Tour, which will run through the beginning of December. And next year, in February, the band will headline their first ever Australian tour. Recently upgraded to six dates and bookended by dates in New Zealand and Japan, the tour will feature support from RIVALS. The Sydney show is already sold out; only VIP tickets remain for the Brisbane show. Finally, in May, the band will appear at Welcome To Rockville and Sonic Temple.
