American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are nothing new to live music and entertainment, and bands have been using them en masse in the last decade or so especially. Among them is Disturbed, who has made it known that they have interpreters at their shows for fans who are deaf or hard of hearing. This is an excellent thing to reach those people and bring them together, which is ostensibly what live entertainment and music are meant to do, right?
So the least you could do is credit them and make them known, which is the opposite of what Disturbed did in a recently-reposted clip on their socials. In the clip, the interpreter is signing for the song "Don't Tell Me," which saw Plush frontwoman Moriah Formica join the band and sing the parts done by Heart's Ann Wilson on the album version. The caption credits her, as well as the videographer Britt Bowman, but fails to acknowledge the interpreter.
See for yourself below:
A few things here. As previously mentioned, the singer in the clip, who isn't even seen in the video, is credited. The videographer is credited and absolutely should be. But why not the interpreter who is also on the job and helping folks have the best experience? Hell, at the rate everyone was getting their flowers, I was expecting the Hells Angels member who passes into frame to get a lower third graphic or something.
This should be something to celebrate. Accessibility and visibility is a wonderful thing. Instead, it's a band who should well know better by now missing the point, aiming so closely at one target that they miss it entirely. Wouldn't be the first time, either.
We take plenty of pot shots at David Draiman and Co. on this site, but at this rate, they're making it too easy for us. Yeah, this is relatively minor compared to signing missiles used to bomb brown people, and on that subject, we will just point out that the interpreter is Black, and both of the other credited parties are white.
For a band that preaches about unity and wants coexistence, they sure do fumble the bag when presented with the opportunity to practice what they preach. If this is the way they pray, I'm not interested in hearing it. What I am interested in hearing is the name of this interpreter so he can get his kudos as he well deserves. By the looks of things, particularly the aforementioned Britt Bowman's Instagram, this is an older clip by about a year or two, so if anyone out there in our nu world knows this guy, please let us know.
Cuz you think they'd know, but they're horribly blind.
