The Dallas-based collective Cantervice have put out a steady stream of singles over the last two and a half years, and now the band is set to release their debut album via FiXT. With an energetic electronic rock style that leans into nu metal grooves and breakdowns, as well as their dystopian lyrical themes, Cantervice breathes life into the genre.
Seven of the album’s ten tracks have been released thus far, and here’s what to expect from each:
“Doomsday” is a radio-ready rocker about letting it all burn down. The chorus is a mean hook that demands to be sung along to.
“Blackout” plays around with 808s in the verses while delivering a powerful chorus, with a call to action against the evils of capitalism and the system at large.
“The Masquerade” is a fist-pumping rocker, reminiscent of bands like Motionless in White and Architects. Lots of guitars, synth shenanigans, and plenty of bounce in the mosh pit.
“Into the Dark” slows things down and detunes the guitars further. Vocalist Robert Matlock puts in a dynamic performance here, with the verses being sung to the point of almost being rapped with pitch, while the chorus brings another hum-along, sing-along moment in a record full of them.
“Enemy at the Gates” is aggressive, with Matlock bellowing lines such as “we can’t be bought, bullied, bargained, beat, or reasoned with / So come to terms, cuz you’re not getting out of this.” This is the rage song of the disc, if ever there was.
“Chasing the Sky” feels like Motionless in White again, as Matlock sounds shockingly like Chris Motionless in his screams. Otherwise, this sounds like later-era Disturbed with notes of acts like Blue Stahli.
“Where Do We Stand?” closes out the record with a power ballad of sorts, a contemplative look at the current state of things. Amid all of the fire and the fallout, this song serves as a check-in, a survey of the status quo, and what is to come.
Zero Hour will release on September 27th via FiXT Music. Preview the album below:
