Today marks the newest Bandcamp Friday, in which all sales on the platform go directly to the creators. The service waives their fee, which is admittedly small to begin with, meaning more money goes into the coffers of those who create. Especially with the shenanigans that streaming platforms like Spotify pull, as well as the endless greed and enshittification of said platforms, it's a good thing to support the so-called little guys, and that is a cause we can absolutely get behind.
This campaign began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to help independent artists, the ones most shafted and shunted by the lockdowns, to be better able to make a living. Typically, this is the first Friday of the month, though Bandcamp has limited this to only a few months out of the year. If you're unsure, they do have their own website, fittingly named isitbandcampfriday.com.
As much as we love to talk about the heavy hitters of the nu world, we urge you to take a minute to scope out independent musicians within the genre (or any genre, really) and see what they're up to. Buy some merch, grab some digital tunes, whatever you are able and willing to. You'll be amazed at what you can find.
Of course we feel compelled to plug our own release from last year, A Christmas F*cking Miracle: 15 Covers and 15 Originals by the New Wave of Nu Metal. If physical media is more your speed, we of course have the 2CD version in our store, but if you've gone the way of MP3-only, check the link above for that.
Remember, friends: your favorite band had to start somewhere. That's what movements like Bandcamp Friday are about.
