Song Review: Mushroomhead // "Prepackaged"

Chugging on the low strings, rattling bass, and even a pre-chorus section filled with machine gun kick drums, this track is set to be one of the heavier offerings in Mushroomhead’s catalog to date.

In Soviet Cleveland, dishes wash YOU.

Mushroomhead have cranked out their own blend of nu metal for over three decades, with eight studio albums and over thirty music videos to date. Their line-up has undergone some serious changes since their previous album, 2020’s A Wonderful Life, with founding vocalist J Mann and sampler/keyboardist St1tch departing the Cleveland-based outfit for a second time in 2022. Longtime drummer Skinny is now the band’s studio drummer, with once-touring drummer Aydin Kerr joining the primary lineup. Now, the masked avant-garde group is looking to strike with their sophomore album on Napalm Records, the upcoming Call the Devil.

The most recent single from their soon-to-be ninth studio album is “Prepackaged,” a five-minute ripper of a number. Chugging on the low strings, rattling bass, and even a pre-chorus section filled with machine gun kick drums, this track is set to be one of the heavier offerings in Mushroomhead’s catalog to date. The chorus is a radio-ready, catchy hook featuring the song's sole clean vocals, while the last line of the track in true metal fashion proclaims that “the worst is yet to come.”

Mushroomhead will be busy for the rest of 2024, as they are set to play Inkcarceration Festival on July 19th in Mansfield, OH before embarking on a European tour with Dymytry and Silenzer beginning on August 9th, the same day that Call the Devil drops. The band will tour stateside in October alongside Upon a Burning Body, There Is No Us, and Mind Incision, culminating in their annual Halloween show at Cleveland’s legendary Agora.

You can pre-order Call the Devil, out August 9th via Napalm Records, here. Check out the music video for “Prepackaged” as well as US tour dates below.
