"It's harder to simply love you than it is to say goodbye."
Yeah, this one's been a long time coming.
Injury Episode has been a project in the shadows for quite some time, with bits appearing as early as 2023, where a lucky few at Slam Dunk Festival 2023 would be given a CD titled How I Hurt Myself. This limited disc included demos of "crying", "face." and a secret track, which would come to be known as "CDP" in live sets (as well as "STOP LOOKING AT THE FUCKING SETLIST"), and now is fully revealed as "Classic.Death.Pose.". Mid-2025 saw the band debut the album's closer, "treading", at Download Festival, and the Flesh Stays Together tour with Dying Wish featured a track that went under a few names for some time : "connor" (named after the band's former bassist), "litrly lad", "entry 578 dear maeve" , and a personal favorite, "hehe". That last track is now known to be "Pharmacy Film".

Static Dress is no stranger to an easter egg, to mysteries hiding in plain sight. The band have been very vocal in encouraging the community to dig deeper, whether that be in music videos, live sets, hidden YouTube videos, the three video games the band has released, or even the merch. For those fortunate few that have partaken, Injury Episode has existed in the background for some time, but now it's here, in the shadows no longer after a long four years.
In the world of the music however, no time seems to have passed at all, with the intro track picking up right where the band's debut album, Rouge Carpet Disaster, left off. The final words of closer "Cubicle Dialogue" are echoed here, before leading into the proper intro :
"SO CLOSE TO BEING FREE, WHY WOULD I STOP NOW."
"questioning" gives us the first real taste of how the album sounds and, to put it bluntly, Injury Episode sounds goddamn MASSIVE. Expertly produced by Loathe's Erik Bickerstaffe and mixed by Hunter Young and Brandan Lopez of Digital Ghost Audio (with guitarist Vincent Weight holding down the drum mix), every strum of guitar, every slam of a snare, every pluck of bass, and every shout has tremendous weight to it. The sound is elevated further by its raw production and real instrumentation. In an interview with The Line Of Best Fit, frontman Olli Appleyard had this to say: “When people refer to us as nostalgic, I think they’re just remembering when alternative music sounded like it was made by real people.” This is a real record, it's raw and authentic, and its sound reflects that tenfold.
"questioning" wastes no time, cutting off Appleyard's whisper with a piercing guitar riff, with drummer Sam Ogden and bassist George Holding following closely behind, the latter letting out a splitting scream to start off the album lyrically.
"DON'T BREATHE"
"questioning" tells the story of twins Sarah and Maeve, who have become a key player in the band's ever expanding-lore in recent months and are featured on the cover. The twins are artificial beings created in a pursuit of the perfect human. Unfortunately, they're imperfect, meaning they'll be altered and tinkered with, painfully.
"DISFIGURED, FIXED, STILL NOT REAL
PATCH WORKED ABUSE
BABY TURN THE KNIFE"
"questioning" gives the first real taste of the new dynamic for the band, as Injury Episode is the first album written as a group, and the first full length since Holding joined the band. Everyone's got more to do, and at some point on the record, everybody sings.
Track four on the record, "Adapter", is where the dynamic truly shines. Twinkly guitar melds with laid back snarework, underlaid with a pumping bassline, the perfect backdrop for Appleyard to lay down some buttery-smooth vocals.
"KEEP COUNTING MISTAKES I'VE MADE
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT ARE THEY?
ALONE I NAVIGATE
THROUGH FICTION
IGNORING PRECONDITIONS
SOMETHING'S WRONG WITH ME AND I CANNOT FACE IT"
The mellow verses explode into powerful choruses, with Appleyard's ever-steady vocals melding into an impressive hook:
"AND I SEE THROUGH EACH LIE
THAT YOU SPENT AWAY ON HIM
NOT WANTED HERE ANYMORE
JUST SUFFERING, KILLING FOR FUN
I GAVE HIM MY OWN SAFE HAVEN"
What elevates the track from good to great is what follows: A screamed bridge ushers in an effortless key change, the kind that perhaps would have made an earlier Appleyard falter, but here he soars, significantly stronger vocally than in previous works. He steps back, and the track crescendos as Weight lays down one hell of a guitar solo before sinking back into the subdued strums of the intro. The track distorts in its final seconds, acting as a transition into single "Nostalgia Kills", raw as ever.
The fact that this is the weakest single speaks volumes for the sheer quality on display throughout Injury Episode's rollout. A fascinating blend of the band's new sound with their old, and a monstrous feature from Underoath have made this one to keep spinning, albeit not as much as the following track, "...hospice".
If the previous singles or tracks were not a surefire sign that Static Dress is destined to headline festivals and command stadiums, this track is a guarantee. That chorus is still breathtaking, and the lyricism still as poignant as the first listen. What follows, however, is a complete tonal shift.
"lip critic" is a blast, from start to finish. Truly a highlight amongst highlights. A whispered intro starts the 200-mile-a-minute race, and Appleyard is a fucking freight train, smashing through vocal runs and jagged frys with ease, bringing Holding in tow. The two go back and forth on the track's choruses, letting Appleyard fly through the cleans and Holding slam through the harsh vocals. Holding up the rhythm section is Ogden, switching from punchy fills to blasts at the drop of a hat. There's an intensity in the track's speed, but also in it's lyricism. "lip critic" tells the story of one wronged by a secret lover and the pain that comes with not being able to express it.
"USED SILENCE TO COVER HIS TRAIL
SO KEEP THE MOTOR ON ABOUT HOW WE'RE JUST "BEST FRIENDS"
(THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID)
THE SILENCE INSIDE OF ME
IT'S THE SILENCE INSIDE OF ME
THE APOLOGY FEELS SO...
IT FEELS SO CHEAP"
One of Injury Episode's many strengths is how many different tones the band is able to touch on, switching up the vibe without sacrificing pacing or coming across as jarring. Continuing where "lip critic" left off is "Male-Bomb", one of the heaviest tracks on the record. Three and a half minutes of pure rage, "Male-Bomb" features the band at its angriest.
" I HOPE YOUR FAMILY BECOMES SEE-THROUGH
YOUR KIDS GROW TO HATE YOU
AS THEY SEE THE FACE OF A MAN THEY WISH THEY NEVER KNEW."
Hell, the album's quietest tune "Adult Diamond" follows the explosive "Classic.Death.Pose", the explosive breakdown of the latter transitioning into the gentle coos of the former. Not only do they effectively juggle this variation in tone, but lyrical content as well. This is a much more personal record than the band's previous work, and there's a lot more emotional ground to cover. "dull blade disguise" touches on how many people have bit the band's style (the video also includes an egregious amount of CRT effects and zoom ins, a cheeky jab at this fact), while the earlier mentioned "hospice" touches on the abandonment people face as they age.
And the album's closer, "treading" has the most heartbreaking line of all:
"IT'S HARDER TO SIMPLY LOVE YOU THAN IT IS TO SAY GOODBYE."
As the track crescendos for one final time, the listener is left with a question.
"IS THIS THE WAY IT'S MEANT TO BE?
IS THIS THE WAY IT'S MEANT TO BE?"
This is not an album with a bright conclusion, and that's something the band has been very vocal about. There is no neat little bow at the end to tie things up, no light at the end of the tunnel. You're still in the tunnel after that final note, and that's the point:
"We get taught these days that there’s always a problem and then a resolution, and if you haven’t solved it yet, it’s not a good thing. Injury Episode is about coming to terms with the fact that sometimes, not having it all figured out yet is absolutely fine. And as long as you’re taking the right steps and you’re improving yourself, that’s all that really matters. Don’t worry about getting to the end of your destination, just worry about who you are on the way." - Olli Appleyard during the Live Death Display
Injury Episode is a step up from Rouge Carpet Disaster and Prologue... in almost every regard, but it's not perfect. Prologue... was the body of work by the band to feature interludes, and that's continued here, but Prologue...'s interludes tell a story. When the car crashes in the lore, you hear it happen on record. You hear Emile and Nancy enter the diner, and then leave it aflame. It's such an interesting concept, and that's why it's so missed here. The interludes on Injury Episode are nice transition pieces, with the first leading beautifully into "hospice..." with a swell of distorted strings, but they could be so much more. Insane that the biggest gripe with the album feels more like a nit-pick than anything.
It's not often a band with such a strong debut record as Rouge Carpet Disaster is able to top it on the second go-around, but Static Dress have succeeded tenfold. Injury Episode is one hell of a record, and one that will surely remain present in rotation for some time. F0r those that listen for the right reasons, there's plenty to enjoy. (Hell, my mother is quite a fan of "...hospice") This is not a record to be skipped through, it's not one you toss on once and just replay your favorites, it's one you take the time to truly soak in.
"The creation of this new record was by far not an easy feat. It’s the four of us, all together, doing this, and doing it for the right reasons. Not just making something to get by, not just making a product to be sold on a shelf, not just making something to pass the time. It’s the most honest and truest versions of ourselves we could possibly be."
Injury Episode is real music for real people. It doesn't get much better than that.
