Deftones are geared to release their new album, "private music" tonight at midnight EST. This will mark the first album release by the band in 5 years, marking the end of the longest span of time between respective albums since their debut in 1995. However, before the midnight release, the band let fans livestream the new album early.
privatemusic.tv was a domain launched earlier today (August 21st), that allowed fans to engage with the new album early, as well as some extras. The site itself was presented like a cable broadcast, with users able to alternate between 3 channels, with each channel having scheduled video playing simultaneously. The broadcasts started at 6 PM PST, and ended with a finale at 8:30 PM PST.

What was there was absolutely insane. Not only were they broadcasting songs and videos from the new album--albeit sandwiched in-between ambient clips--but there were also a wealth of lost media goodies from the entire Deftones backlog and beyond. This included everything from Chino Moreno's remix of The Cure's "Warsong" to a clip from the 1931 film "Dracula". Want to watch a 6 minute voodoo ritual? You've got it. What about a series of commentary videos from the band reacting to their music videos in the vein of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"? It's there. Fancy behind-the-scenes footage from the "Change (In The House of Flies)" video? Deftones has you covered.
On top of the new music, this website was an archivist's playground. I can only pray the band uploads these videos somewhere, because the sheer volume of what was broadcasted is absurd. And the finale? A 5 song live performance, with tracks new and old. Holy shit. What appeared to be a mere listening party at first glance quickly became my absolute favorite part of the album rollout. I hope more bands do something similar in the future.
