It's no secret private music features some of the best Deftones music in over a decade. Judging by their new set list, the band agrees. Not content to simply offer fans an update on an old classic, the Grammy-winning alt metal legends marked the sixth annual Dia De Los Deftones with the live debut of four songs from the new album.
The first new addition, the swaggering "locked club," cropped up between opener "my mind is a mountain" and "ecdysis," completing the album's opening trifecta and leading into frequent opener "Be Quiet and Drive." After that powerful opening statement, the rest of the surprises were saved for the show's back half. "Street Carp," making its first appearance since 2019, switched things up following "Rosemary" and leading into the classic "Change" and new classic, "infinite source." Much like on the album, the exuberance of "infinite source" gave way to two new additions, the sprawling, sensuous "souvenir" and snarling, sinister gem "cut hands." The final surprise addition came as the encore opened with the stripped-down romance of "i think about you all the time," very much of a piece with the songs like "Sextape" and "Cherry Waves" whose TikTok virality helped spur the band's recent resurgence.
On November 16th, Deftones will take part in the Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City and starting at the end of January, the band tour Europe and the UK with supporting acts Denzel Curry and Drug Church. And next October the band will perform at the Texas stop of the newly revived Sick New World.
Now, fans can conceivably experience up to eight out of private music's eleven songs. That's a full 71% of new album getting stage time. Not bad for a band thirty years into their career.
