The year 2001 is remembered fondly among those of us in the nu world. The crossroads of nu metal and professional wrestling is one which we've celebrated here time and again, but even just through a pro wrestling lens, the year 2001 may be the most game-changing, affecting year in the industry's decades-long history. In his newest project, Luke Owen, presenter for WrestleTalk and formerly of Under Consoletation, looks at the year that was with 2001: The Death And Rebith Of Wrestling, and its Kickstarter campaign ends this week.
The synopsis for the book is as follows:
2001: The Death And Rebirth of Wrestling is a month-by-month, blow-by-blow, slam-by-slam account of the year which changed the professional wrestling world forever. A year that saw one company buy its competition; its biggest stars lose their box office appeal, leave for Hollywood or miss the year due to injury. A year that saw the boom period slowly die out. A year in which promoters and wrestlers who found success in the 90s struggled to find new relevance, but in the background the stars of the future were getting ready to revolutionize the scene.
Written by Luke Owen (WrestleTalk, Lights, Camera, GAME OVER!) and edited by Oli Davis (WrestleTalk, HearRational), with brand new interviews from those who saw everything unfold before their eyes, 2001: The Death And Rebirth of Wrestling charts the one of the most interesting times in professional wrestling’s history, and how the year wrestling died was also its rebirth.
In addition to being co-host of the WrestleTalk Podcast, Owen is a fan of nu metal, regularly shouting out Limp Bizkit and Silly Goose on the show, making him more than qualified to cover this tumultuous period in the wrestling world. For those inclined, he and co-host Oli Davis are currently covering The Invasion throughout the year, with some episodes available on YouTube, and all episodes available on the WrestleTalk Patreon page.
The Kickstarter for 2001: The Death And Rebirth Of Wrestling reached its 5,000 GBP goal in a matter of just nine hours, and at time of publication stands at just under 21,000 GBP. There is still time to pledge to it, with the conclusion coming this Saturday, June 13th, with an estimated delivery on rewards of April 2027.
