Nu metal and video games: A tale as old as the genre itself. Whether it be Breaking Benjamin's "Blow Me Away" (or an entire suite of tracks by Incubus) in Halo 2, Korn's theme for the ill-fated PlayStation game Haze, or even Fred Durst himself appearing as a playable character in WWF Raw, this genre has a deep-seated history with video games and video game advertisements. Hell, Microsoft sponsored Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution tour in 2007 to promote the release of Halo 3, with the beta version of the game playable in tents.
Recently, as nu metal reenters the mainstream, this trend has returned. Elden Ring: Nightreign used Evanesence in its trailer, and Battlefield 6 used Limp Bizkit in its recent gameplay reveal trailer.
P.O.D. are the latest to join their nu metal peers, with their 2001 track "Boom" featured front and center in the aptly named 'Bring The Boom' Xbox pre-order trailer for Helldivers II. No remixing, no added orchestral section, just the riffs of guitarist Marcos Curiel to carry you through the duration. The track itself is almost as bombastic as the carnage of gameplay. If seeing this doesn't make you go "hell yeah", I don't know what will. Maybe the tease at the end? Who knows.
Helldivers II will release on Xbox Series X|S on August 26th. The game is currently available on PlayStation 5 and PC. Witness the awesome carnage for yourself:
