Song Review: Nonpoint // "Underdog"

“Underdog” is a powerful, rocking track, with the guitars of Jaysin Zeilstra and Rasheed Thomas taking the reins and leading the charge.

POV: You beat them to grandma's house and now have regrets.

Nonpoint has been one of the best things to come out of Florida since the late Nineties, bringing together hard rock riffs with the Puerto Rican influences of singer Elias Soriano. From appearances on soundtracks for NASCAR, the WWE SmackDown vs RAW games, and the 2005 Miami Vice film, the band’s music has been featured in its fair share of media, to say nothing of their to-date twelve studio albums, various EPs, and live releases. Now, as the band prepares for a summer full of festivals and their own Kickin’ & Screamin’ Tour alongside Southern rock outfit Black Stone Cherry, they have passed down a song for the longtime fans.

“Underdog” is a powerful, rocking track, with the guitars of Jaysin Zeilstra and Rasheed Thomas taking the reins and leading the charge. Soriano’s voice has just enough grit to it to grant an extra oomph without coming off as forced. He delivers the bridge in the fast-talking, rap-sung style that he’s known for, covering a great deal of lyrical real estate in the bars he allows himself. This is especially the case in the last line of the bridge: “Even when they stack it up and bet it all against / it’s comeback season.” The flow of Soriano should not be understated.

The song is the band’s first offering of 2024, following the Heartless EP released last November. No word yet on an upcoming record, but as it has been nearly five years since the band’s previous LP X, it’s hopefully only a matter of time.

Check out the video, which features appearances from members of Powerman 5000, Skindred, Taproot, and many more.
